Perfect Piping-Hot Outdoor Pizza Grilling Tips

With just a few simple ingredients, a hot grill, and some fresh garden-grown garnish, you can serve up some delicious grilled pizza at your next outdoor party—or enjoy it as an easy DIY meal to kick off the weekend!


You don’t need a fancy outdoor oven to make your very own homemade pizza—your trusty grill will do just fine! Grab some store-bought dough (or make your own if you’re feeling extra adventurous!), olive oil, tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, and don’t forget to bring your appetite!

Grilled Pizza

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb. pizza dough (homemade or store-bought)
  • ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 can tomato sauce 
  • 1 lb. mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • Homegrown garden herbs and veggies, to top (e.g.,):
    • Basil
    • Cherry tomatoes
    • Bell peppers
    • Red onions
    • Cucumbers
    • Eggplant
    • Mushrooms

Preparation:

  1. Roll out the pizza dough to your desired shape and thickness. Brush both sides with olive oil.
  2. Heat grill to high and place dough directly onto grates, cooking for about 2-3 minutes per side until lightly browned. Remove from the grill and let cool.
  3. If adding veggies, slice and toss with olive oil, salt, and pepper. Grill until tender and slightly charred.
  4. Spread a thin layer of tomato sauce over the dough and sprinkle the shredded mozzarella over top.
  5. Arrange the grilled vegetables on top of the cheese.
  6. Place the pizza back on the grill, close the lid, and cook over high heat for an additional 5-7 minutes, or until the cheese has melted and the crust is crispy.
  7. Remove the pizza from the grill and let cool. Garnish with fresh basil or other herbs from your garden.
  8. Slice and serve your delicious grilled garden veggie pizza!
