When Is the Best Time to Rake Leaves?
A thick layer of leaves will keep your lawn from absorbing air, critical nutrients, and sunlight, which can lead to disease and also attract pests, so try to rake at least once before the first frost. Keep in mind that the task will be much easier with dry leaves! One alternative to raking is to use a mulching mower to chop up the leaves, which will then decompose into a natural fertilizer.

Do I Need to Mow My Lawn in the Fall?
Yes! You’ll want to cut your grass short in the fall to avoid mold and to allow your grass to spring back to vibrant life next year. It’s also really important to aerate your lawn before winter—this allows air, nutrients, and water to seep in to help the roots thrive.

Do I Need to Fertilize My Lawn in the Fall?
Fertilizing in the fall provides energy and nutrients to your lawn before it goes dormant. The roots store food for the winter, which gives the grass an initial growth spurt when it emerges in the spring. Apply the fertilizer a few weeks before that last mowing!

When Is the Best Time to Plant Grass Seed?
You should reseed your lawn in the early fall when the weather is not too hot or dry. The cooler weather and shorter days help the grass seed retain moisture. You can do the whole lawn or just fill in patches. You’ll be glad you did during spring and summer!

Do I Still Need to Water in the Fall?
Your lawn should be watered well into the fall months to help it recover from the stress of summer and build up resilience for winter. It also helps the fertilizer do its job! Just make sure drain and store your hose before the first freeze!
