Dos and Don’ts of Garage Storage

Not all storage is created equal! Here is our list of dos and don’ts to help protect your property and your home!

Don’t store anything susceptible to moisture damage directly on a concrete floor. Concrete floors can trap and hold moisture which can lead to mold or moisture damage. Consider installing resin cabinetry or shelving to keep items off the floor and add an extra layer of protection.

Do consider a storage system. Consider adding shelving in your garage or basement to keep items off the floor. A garage storage system will also work well in most basements.

Do use airtight containers. Airtight containers or bags will protect contents from pests, moisture, and temperature fluctuations.

Don’t store electronics in the basement or garage if it is not temperature controlled. Electronics do not hold up well to extreme temperature fluctuations.

Don’t store paint in a non-temperature controlled space. If paint is exposed to extreme cold, it could separate and become unusable.

Do store canned goods in a cool, dry place. Canned food can spoil if left in a high-temperature or high-humidity area.

Don’t store firewood in your garage or basement. Firewood invites pests. It’s best to keep it outside at a safe distance from the house. (Pro-tip: Consider storing it in a deck box for easy access and protection from the elements)

Don’t store photos in the garage. Photos need an airtight container and a temperature-controlled space to keep them as vivid as your memories! Consider scanning them and storing them digitally.

Do use your imagination. Get creative! You can repurpose items like a Trash Hideaway as a basement laundry hamper or transform your Patio Storage and Prep Station into a mobile craft center!
