Pretty as all that fresh powder might be, the truth is that a snowstorm can wreak havoc on your space. So with winter on the way, we’ve collected our top tips (and assembled our most trusty tools!) to help you shut down a snowy situation and get back to that hot cup of cocoa.

Rake Your Roof So You Can Relax!

If you’ve ever shoveled a long sidewalk or driveway, you know that snow and ice can be surprisingly heavy! Keep in mind that all that weight accumulates on your roof after a snowstorm, and it can cause permanent damage to your property if neglected. After a storm, snow usually melts during the day and refreezes at night, creating a gutter full of ice that continues to build and build—it makes for beautiful icicles, but the damage can serious!

So how’s a normal person supposed to reach way up there? Here’s the straight scoop: get yourself a snow roof rake—extend the handle—and carefully pull the snow off the roof and down into the yard below. Be sure to do this part first to avoid having to re-shovel walkways. Rake off the shed roof too while you’re at it. If you’ve got kids, all the extra snow will give you a great “head” start on your snowman!

Say Goodbye to Snowy Surprises!

Before it’s time to roll out the red carpet for family and friends, start by deciding where to place your screen—you can set a bedsheet or polyester screen against the side of your home or a large shed. Alternatively, you can hang it from an awning, clothesline, roof, or pergola—or even attach it to a pair of freestanding poles for easy setup and teardown. Make sure you leave plenty of space in front for seating your guests!

A Clean Sweep

Be sure you have enough comfy seats to accommodate the entire audience! Remember to keep plenty of pillows and blankets tucked away in case the temperature gets too chilly—or the movie gets too scary to watch! Chairs with hidden storage are a perfect way to keep a cushion or cozy sweater close at hand. Spread a blanket or two out on the grass for those who want to lie down or enjoy their popcorn picnic-style!
